7.5 Variations in Offence Characteristics

Although in the vast majority of familicide-suicide offences the perpetrator is male, not all offence characteristics appear to be as homogeneous. Apart from whether or not the spouse was killed, and who else was murdered, there are variations in the number of victims, whether the murdered children are biological, or step children, of the perpetrator, mode of homicide-suicide employed, relationship status between the parents, known history of perpetrator threats towards self, and/or others, known history of domestic violence , known history of depression or other mental illness , family circumstances preceding the offence, including economic and community status, and family involvement with community agencies, including police and the Family Court. To further complicate this researcher applies various definitions to familicide-suicide. For example, Websdale (2010) restricted his study on familicide-suicide to only those cases where the wife and children were murdered, followed by the perpetrator’s suicide , and excluded cases of perpetrator parasuicide and those where the perpetrator was a single parent. In contrast to Websdale, Johnson and Sachman n include cases where the wife was not killed and some where the perpetrator survived his suicide attempt (Johnson & Sachmann, 2014; Sachmann & Johnson, 2014), whilst Yardley, Wilson and Lynes (2014), in their study of familicide-suicide in Great Britain, included honour killings in their sample.
